Cryptic Carries out Announced Ban Wave; Major Accounts Hit Across All Platforms

[blog_subscription_form]

Well, we hoped we could talk about the preview release of Module 15 today, but apparently Cryptic had other plans and carried out the ban wave they announced a week ago for exploiting the Ravenloft Hunt bug. This also means that the few bans on streamers we reported was only the tip of the iceberg. The majority of the accounts were banned yesterday. We’re being told that sanctions range from 1-day suspensions to permanent bans while also a bunch of minor offender were stripped of their (rough) Astral Diamonds. Judged by the information we have, this might actually be the biggest ban wave on player accounts the game has seen so far.

[sc name=”discord”]

You have to be careful because of the general hyperbole involved in things like this, but it certainly looks like many major endgame players were hit. Of course there’s also always rumors that innocent people have been hit as well. Cryptic is notoriously known for not always getting stuff right, but covering the game for so long (and talking to guys that got banned) we think that the sanctions indeed mostly hit accounts that actually exploited the Hunt bug to some extent. Since most haven’t gone public we are hesitant to call out specific guys, but one person who’s very openly communicating his ban is popular streamer and YouTuber Nova. He’ll probably make a video about the incident soon enough, but being banned on the same day you get the chance to interview Lead Designer Thomas Foss is certainly one of the more bizarre Neverwinter stories this year. As mentioned quite a lot of hardcore endgame players received at least suspensions. So we’ll probably hear about more bans in the coming days.

[su_youtube_advanced url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ep_Phe1m8VI” https=”yes”]

How to Deal with Bans?

The extent of the ban wave is surprising to us, because the exploit, historically and economically, didn’t do a whole lot of damage. So the assumption is that Cryptic felt like they had to take a stance here. We’re even hearing perma-bans for [sc name=”astralicon”]1,000,000 to [sc name=”astralicon”]3,000,000 exploited currency. That’s a lot, especially if you’re a new player, but in the grand scheme of things hardly matters. People back in the day got suspensions for ten times the amounts. Also people that have spend ZEN in the past weren’t sanctioned as harshly, which is always a point of contention.

Now, if you got banned and are sure you didn’t do anything wrong, please follow what we’ve written in this article to contact support and make them look into your case again. Be polite but persistent until you get what you want. If you’ve been exploiting it doesn’t have to be the end of the line as well. We would just sit out suspensions unless they are unjustified, but you can also try to appeal a ban. We would advise you to offer them an apology, and that they are free to strip Astral Diamonds and maybe even Enchantments from your account. It’s something that has worked in the past and worth a shot if you absolutely can’t live without Neverwinter.

Always on Fridays

We’ve talked about how Cryptic handled the bug in depth around here. So we won’t get into it again. In case you’re interested, many YouTuber have released opinions that can be listened to right now. However, one thing that’s always annoying is how Cryptic purposely carries out these waves on Fridays. Unless something changed, official support doesn’t work over the weekend, which means players have to wait three days until they even get a chance to talk to someone. It also feels we’re moving backwards in terms of communication. We praised the studio of being more open with ban-waves, but this one was neither acknowledged yesterday, nor did they allow any discussion about it. This statement about account inquiries is all we got before the devs fled into their weekend and was a reaction to players swarming the forum to either rant or asking for help.

In case you do want to talk the implications, don’t try your luck on the official Subreddit or Arcgames. Mods on both platforms as always are deleting posts left and right. On the sub you at least have the opportunity to post in this thread, but it’s tightly moderated as well. You can however freely jump into the discussion on our Discord or message board. There’s also a new, and already quite active, alternative Neverwinter sub that allows open talk on the game. If you want to track the mods’ actions and see what users have posted, you can use one of the Reddit undelete services and our ARC Undelete tracker.

Hope Everyone Made It out Alive!

Phew. That was a lot to digest for the community today. We hope you guys made it out alive and don’t miss too many friends ingame!

I agree with the ban completely .I was invited to glitch hunts they were even calling them glitch hunts in chat. It wasn’t a trap it was an error and shitty players took advantage of it to get an unfair edge. I refused to participate in any of the glitch hunts and I play almost everyday I had plenty of chances. Don’t cheat you won’t get in trouble easy as that. It takes away from those of us grinding away working to get to the top.

I really dont understand, why they (crapty) let the bug run soo many time ? Why dont fix ? i think they do it for empty the server. Like we in Brazil used to said “This is a Shoot in the feet” ( É um tiro no pé), cause a lot of Endgame, that has yours friend punish, will be stop and seek for others games, like me, my friend has punish, i will not run any content alone, just talk to to my friend and seek another Free MMO. This is it.

Sorry but what the fact that they know about a glitch and take forever to fix has anything to do with use it knowing that is wrong and the ToS say you can be banned?
You were caught with the hand in the cookie jar, and you complaing that you get send to your room.
If you didn’t exploit contact support, but if you did maybe you would think it better the next time.

The way Wow and everquest handled things, if it works its not an exploit. They were pretty quick to fix the bugs they did release, but they never banned anyone for something like this. We’re not talking about people hacking here, this is simply playing the game as it was released.

Cryptic did a big error by not fixing this soon enough. As soon as it was known on PC, you could be sure console would exploit it the first day of the release. So that’s bad move for Cryptic.

HOWEVER. When as a player you know something is not WAI, because it leads to exploit bug and to some bug fixing from them, when as this same player you do it to exploit the game and generate money out of thin air, expect to be ban.

I’m glad the banhammer worked. I do hope there was no innocent accounts banned, and if it’s the case, that they’ll be clear soon, but I’m happy to hear that exploiters got what they deserved.

For sure, the studio handled this bug very badly. It should have never hit console, because they saw it on PC first. But each part got his responsability. You know it’s an exploit and you still do it? Get lost, there are legit players out there that don’t get that unfair advantage.

Given the standard Craptic sloth ethic (I am not sure how else to refer to their piss poor work ethic and lack of quality assurance) and their history of handling bans there will undoubtedly be large numbers of accounts that never used the exploit that get banned.

It also nice to see that Craptic is showing off its customer no service skills again via the use of Friday ban waves paired with a customer service department that does not work weekends.

The banning on a Friday when customer service is closed was to probably keep there communication lines from exploding. From what I have seen most are 1 to 3 day bans. So come Monday people log on and are able to play if they want to and cryptic can focus more on the permanent bans or the accidental bans. If they reply that is, they are notorious for bad customer service. As far as the banning goes every one is at fault, players for exploiting a bug and cryptic for not fixing it immediately. It was handled poorly and I’m hoping it doesn’t hurt the game beyond repair but I have a feeling alot of long time players are going to see this as the slap in the face that it was and move on to other games. Have a feeling that their PR guys are going to be busy for a while trying to clean up this mess.

So, will there be less lag on PC this weekend?

Oddly, MiniMi007 says he got a 1 day ban!

I think Assist Man is a Konsole Kiddie. From the few of his videos that I’ve watched recently, he certainly behaves like a 10 year old, whining “No fair! WAAAH!” Well, when he told his followers that Craptrick could not ban everyone, he was wrong. And he seems to miss one very obvious, very clear, very major point:

    They were warned.

They were told, quite clearly, in the patch notes for PC AND on the Konsole Kiddie forum, that the bug had been “fixed” on PC but had made it onto Konsole.

They were told, quite clearly, on the Konsole Kiddie Forum that action would be taken against anyone abusing the exploit.

And yet Assist Man thinks he is exempt, because they should have fixed it months ago and it’s their fault that he abused it and encouraged his dumb ass fans to abuse it.

Yes, they should have fixed it months ago.

    But they didn’t.

And even the original PC fix could be circumvented, so anyone who did that should be banned as well.

You see, Assist Man, in the world of adults and grown ups, my “contributory negligence” in sleeping with my windows open in the Summer might be used as an excuse for my insurer’s to not pay out. But it is not a valid defence for the burglers in court when arrested with my stuff and tried for their crimes.

We do not blame the victim. We blame the perpetrator.

Personally, I think a 10 day ban and asset stripping would be enough. Make it so they gained nothing, not lost more than they exploited, and also lose 10 day’s play and 10 VIP keys. If they are real fans of the game, 10 days should be enough to make the point.

I would also say that if Reddit had not been infiltrated by “Offical Form Moderator” Wannabees, more open and wider discussion of this exploit would have sorted the problem long ago. Make an even playing field, so everyone knows about it and everyone knows that they WILL be banned if they exploit it.

Remember how broken the Lostmauth set was, especially in PvP? That took YEARS to fix, despite all the evidence posted on the forum.

Remember the Astral Resonator Fountaineer exploit? That went on for months and months and months, and Zen went from 360 AD each, instantaneous, to 500 AD each and a 14 million backlog. Now it’s 21 million, 3 years later.

The ONLY reason they fixed that exploit is because someone posted a link to a YT video on the official forum. The poster got banned for his trouble, people who scammed 50 million AD did not, and some of them play to this day.

Unless they just got banned, that is.

    😡

would make more sense if everyone called it for what it is.. sorry even you josh IMO
no exploit was used. (no code was modified. no software or hardware tools were employed to gain a different result. etc…)

the devs coded in a bug.
i’d go so far as to even call it an undocumented and unintended cheat code for those old enough to remember… games had them built in all the time.

this game is all about pushing buttons in sequences to gain rewards.
someone figured out how to push some buttons to get a different reward than the devs desired?
(sound familiar … calling all those old cheat codes)

and it got reported, and never fixed for what.. months?

    exploit my ass….
    sloppy coding, yes
    sloppy QA, yes
sloppy project management, yes (they released the game on 2 whole different platforms knowing what it contained? thats just amazing from an experienced PM standpoint. i’d consider firing myself for doing something like that)
    sloppy public relations, yes

    could go on and on

on the other hand its their game. they can kick ya out for whatever they want.
if you spent money, chargeback is your friend. move on and find another game i’d say.

I had to reply because your knowledge is fully wrong. In a video game an exploit is using a bug or glitch found to make whatever the event trigger something that it was never meant to do. This hunt exploit is that an exploit. Now yes the bug when knew about should have been fixed asap and yes should never had went on the live server at all. It did but that never meant to use it neither.

I’m posting this from jail. You see, for the last month, I noticed the bank’s rear door didn’t shut properly. I emailed the bank manager and he told me he’d have it fixed as soon as possible. But damn, if I didn’t walk by last night and it still wasn’t fixed. What else am I to do but walk on in and clean out the cash drawers? After all, THEY had a faulty door and they had WEEKS to repair the lock.

    • September 22, 2018 at 3:15 pm
      Permalink

Your story is missing details. The door’s security issue had already been reported during testing, but the bank decided to install it anyway. Over a few months, a growing group of people noticed the open door, and started to steal money. Nobody seemed to care, although the bank clearly knew about the issue and that money was taken away. The bank eventually fixed the door, but it turned out that another location in another city had the same issue. Information quickly spread, and people used the rear door to extract money from the bank. The bank once again didn’t care, and eventually the whole city would use the rear door to grab some cash. First people only came at night, but then many started using the door during the day as well. Getting your daily bucks from the bank became the norm until the bank suddenly announced that they are investigating an issue with their rear doors and are going to sue everyone who took advantage.

No, but then I don’t think rl comparisons are super great at all. It’s a game, nobody committed an actual crime, and most certainly didn’t steal money from anyone.

I don’t mind cheaters getting banned, but also don’t mind cheating because it’s not affecting my personal game play experience one bit. There’s so much hyperbole and finger-pointing involved that it gets lost how losing players for whatever reason first and foremost is sad.

If it’s just a game then nobody should be upset about a few days off and having ill-gotten digital gains removed (I don’t have any inside info, but from what I can see, there were very few permabans issued and for the few that have been claimed by account owners, who knows what their prior history was?) My personal view is that morality is the same in the real and digital world. At the game’s macroeconomic level, cheating in general does affect the average player’s real-money wallet. Based among other things on the work you youself have done here in the past, it’s pretty clear that cheating in general drives prices to exhorbitant levels. The average, honest, time-constrained player may well spend far more Zen reaching end-game due to those inflated prices. If the game loses a few cheaters but better serves the honest player, it will be stronger for it.

Funny to see people pleased that the cheaters got banned. The bottom of the humankind. May I remind you that the boss on Svardborg bugs very often, and we complained but nothing got fixed, still they took money without any problem. May I remind you that everyone in the game used or use the glitch in FBI last boss. Still no ban. May I remind you that the companion token from one character to another seems like a fairy tail? Still not fixed, but they take the money without problem. Yes we cheated and that is so bad (we are obviously going to hell for that) but hey why not fixing the problem before it goes on another platform, especially when it is known for month. The analogy of the bak is pretty good, do you think that any normal human being will walk in front of an unguarded bank full of money without trying? Please…

Sorry, but seeing cheaters punished is something most of us call justice. Cheaters by definition gain an unfair advantage over those who do not cheat. Society pretty much universally considers cheating bad. Not everyone in the game glitches the last FBI boss. Not everyone used the Ravenloft hunt exploit. If you hang with cheaters, it may seem normal to you. It may seem like everyone does it. That’s far from the case. I’m sure it feels bad to be caught cheating but the affected players brought that feeling upon themselves. They know right from wrong, even if some of the posts here might make one wonder.

got an even better one josh:

sorry, gonna have to say thats a pile o crap if you’re on the banks side? (cryptic)

nobody broke in the bank, nobody trespassed on the bank, nobody went in the back door

the bank continuously invited us in as part of an exchange of service/goods. (hunts)

i can only do specifically what the bank allows me to do when there. (pushing sequences of buttons)

the bank thought i would bring in 4 friends, exchange some currency for a different type, and leave (provide poster and cards in exchange for in game rewards determined by a combo of rng and the poster/cards themselves) at their predetermined exchange rate.

i decided it was more efficient to leave my friends outside, exchange some currency, but for a different rate. (hunt coding bug). (pushing sequences of buttons but in a different manner than you thought the best way was)

you still let me do it. i didnt alter your code. i didnt use hardware or software tools. i just pushed buttons differently.

then i went and told you about it (pc bug report at start of mod)

i came back next week and you still let me do it. etc..

2 months (or more?) later you opened up 2 new bank branches (console) with the exact same issue, and still let people exchange currency at a different rate than what you thought was far (console hunt bugs) even though you 100% knew better.

you finally put up a sign at the bank (cryptic warning, but a half ass one. no in game or outside game email)
“please dont use my services in the manner you thought was best. only in the way we think is best, or we’ll consider arresting you”

    some people stop.
a week later you still arrest them.

and the bank is the good guy here?
the same bank that never provided adequate compensation for bugs that cost its customers time/money?

    tyrant lure anyone?
    1. possible no rewards drop at all. some bs answer by a mod that doesnt hold water for 2 seconds. no compensation. multiple bug reports on forum.
    2. scale drop bug. people that farmed / bought / etc.. multiple lures with no chance of getting what they should have. compensation was 1 scale no matter what.
    on and on..

yeah.. the bank is really the good guy here…

I agree with Chris C on his stance. If 95% or even anywhere near that exploited a bug they knowingly released, they shouldn’t ban anyone other than their developers for release of a bug. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. That’s all we have grown to expect from this game and lots of us have spent multiple thousands on this game. I think this may be where my spending ends. Time for a new game! Dragon Age 4 will drop soon. I’d rather not regret the last 3 years of never winter game play but let’s face it, they’re only after your money and they really don’t seem to care how sloppy they release a game. Everyone yelling “yay cheaters banned” makes me laugh considering most people on the game have participated in bugs that weren’t banned. Yeah, you showed us. If it really is upward of 90% players banned on an already increasingly dead game…lol, good luck. Have fun in your empty dungeons.

My message to Sony. Remember cryptic may not answer to us but they have to answer to someone. Just informing you guys as to some terrible behavior from one of your companies that you allow host their game on your console. Cryptic studio makers of mmo neverwinter on Friday banned 10s of thousands of your gamers from its game for exploiting a glitch. I know glitch exploiting is terrible except for the fact that cryptic were aware 6 months ago on their pc preview shard of the issue and never fixed it. They then were informed 3 months ago of the issue and never fixed it. They then brought the mod to PlayStation with glitch included and allowed people to take advantage for weeks and did nothing. Now they have banned people on Friday. Gave no warning, no emails as to how long the suspension lasts. They went into everyone’s accounts and stripped them of currency. No customer service available for the weekend. Cannot communicate through any of their services as they are deleting all posts on their forums. Is this ok with Sony for their gamers to be abused like this? If you are still for the players can I suggest you act on behalf of the players?

About the bank analogy thyrmir, I agree. You left out in thing however. Most of these fools were posting the glitch all over the chat. That is why something had to be done. It was a blatant open attempt. Not done quietly. So the an ology would be a bank or business leaves their property unsecured, I walk by and not only decide to maliciously trespass, but I hold up a huge sign in the middle of the street saying. Join me in the robbery. And flagging likewise fools to join then telling the honest to shut up while the place was being looted.

Most of you explotting fools have no real world experience. I can almost guarantee if people would have been silent about this and did it quietly, it wouldn’t have been as bad as we see. No instead everyone was doing it in front of God and country. It was a literal dare. People, the honest joes were warning not to do it. And people were telling them to shut up continuing in your amatier scam.

You dumbshits deserve it on the account of your stupidity and I love it. And I inadvertently joined one and honestly got a one day ban. Or maybe it was for trolling you jackasses

I may not have as much real world experience as you but I know that in the real world humility is somewhat required when interacting with others and that’s something you have yet to learn.

I guess you had a point in the beginning paragraph, however, most normal people didn’t continue once a ban was threatened. I didn’t even know about the glitch until two days before the ban threat and I made 0 rough ad. Probably around 60k refinement points I used on myself.

Not everyone abuses and I think unfortunately taking ad was a fair price knowing what I know now about how much was gained.

I used the glitch. Not much but a little. I spend 2000$ a month on the game so I wasn’t after AD. I don’t farm salvage period. If I need AD I just buy it. That being said, I deserved the suspension and I have no problem with it. To suggest that paying players and YouTube content creators should be subject to lesser sanctions would be sheer hypocrisy. We all knew the game was not working as intended and we chose to roll the dice. Cryptic could have handled it better, I agree but that changes nothing.

The 1st guild to 20 has actually disbanded. 90 members of Gutbusters left to join a different guild. I wonder if it was hunt related?

this ban wave is just wrong.. i mean if u want to kill your game go for it.. hell u already got our money right? many of us had multiple toons, with thousands of dollars invested into our account toons, and u release a script that says we didnt something wrong.? i dont trust your scripts i can tell u that. nothing was outside of normal game play controls.. so u guys just delete our accounts and say perm ban and i find it funny i get the same jerk every time knucklez or some weird name.. but anyways i asked for another person to handle my ticket he refused i asked for proof he refused.. the guy is a real il keep it pg .. jerk.. wish i can say how i really feel bout him/her w.e anyways no emails went out before it.. no one knew it was wrong till julia posted it on on the fourms.. and i know this much the day that post went up.. i wasnt even in barv let alone all the way to the ban wave.. i never got a email, i never got anything not even a warning.. i have never been in trouble with anything on here. yet they ban us cause they know that we been playing so long that we got our toons perfect so now its time to make em spend more money on another 6 or 8 more 18k toons.. just sad u guys want to crush your game like this.. shoud of stuck with wow .. blizzard atleast took business 101 class.. community should come first

Chancellor Knuckles is fine with me, these days, after I made some very stern complaints. But he has been a complete asshole in the past, a few years back, and refused to pass things on to his seniors and refused to check game logs and finally refused to respond at all. Finally, it was corrected.

You have to be very polite, very firm and very persistent, and also demand he refer it to his line manager. Also, launch another ticket with a different title and it might get picked up by another game master.

Also, if you genuinely did not exploit, you are entitled to have a different customer support staff check your game logs and show you when you were in Barovia exploiting the hunts.

      Is it a perma-ban?

      🙁
