Cryptic Community Manager Apologizes for Joke That Fell Flat

Sometimes being in the spotlight isn’t easy. Just ask Community Manager Julia “nitocris83” Fredrickson, who had to deal with a backlash about something she said during the Q&A stream last Thursday. Julia was jokingly referring to the viewers as “peanut gallery”, which parts of the audience took the wrong way.

[su_quote cite=”Wikipedia” url=”https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanut_gallery”]A peanut gallery was, in the days of vaudeville, a nickname for the cheapest and ostensibly rowdiest seats in the theater, the occupants of which were often known to heckle the performers. The least expensive snack served at the theatre would often be peanuts, which the patrons would sometimes throw at the performers on stage to convey their disapproval. The phrases “no comments from the peanut gallery” or “quiet in the peanut gallery” are extensions of the name.[/su_quote]

Disrespectful?

Some people in the chat immediately started taking offense at the term, which could indeed be seen as disrespectful. Actually Andy “Strumslinger”, who was operating the chat and reading the reactions, felt the need to clarify moments later that it was just a joke. Nonetheless Julia decided to issue a personal apology on her twitter account later that day as well.

No matter whether you think this was an overreaction by viewers or a mistake that warranted the apology, it can be put to rest. It’s virtually impossible that Julia honestly tried to insult someone. Because that’s not only a surefire way to get into the next livestream fail compilation, but fired.

It however makes for some good memes and a new running gag. We’re sure #peanutgallery will trend in the Neverwinterverse for quite a while.

After listening to her and then correcting herself right away it kinda sounds like that is the normal reference they use to talk about the viewers .Just they tend not to say that while live.

The irony is that the reactions prove the name fits

Lol, ridiculous, that’s like saying someone calls you an asshole, you punch him for it to and it proves that you are one.

The fact that Andy had to apologise proves the point it was not a joke and in fact a slip up. Seems the community is referred to as the peanut gallery behind there back
Ofc she apologised she had no choice.

Wow having to apologize to a bunch of idiots who don’t know what a term means. How could it even be misconstrued as offensive? Peanuts are kinda yellow, a lot of gamers are asian, asian people are sometimes referred to as yellow, omigod cryptic hates asian people? I’ts like the professor who got fired over using the term ‘nigardly’ which has nothing to do with the term it sounds like that idiotic students complained about.

Wow, the community feels free to call the whole team ‘Craptic’ and gets offended when the irony is applied to the community instead. What a nonsense.

    .”Peanut gallery”
This phrase intends to reference hecklers or critics, usually ill-informed ones. In reality, the “peanut gallery” names a section in theaters, usually the cheapest and worst, where many black people sat during the era of Vaudeville.

… that is why this was offensive

LMMFAO! GTFO with that nonsense. Way to race bait, Sean. It has nothing to do with where “many black people sat during the era of Vaudeville.” It’s the fact that we have it from the horse’s mouth that Cryptic isn’t making money off Neverwinter, but are contractually obligated to continue working on it, through WOTC and in doing so, are doing it at a loss.

Cryptic NEVER listened to it’s player base. They always did what they wanted, whether it went over well with the community or not. Hearing a CM make a comment with such a derisive and snide tone, even if “in jest”, is offensive all around and only goes to show they probably talk MAD shit about their userbase, behind their backs.

Case in point, referring to Cryptic as “Craptic” is a quick way to find yourself banned from the forums. Clearly she still has her “job” (is she even paid?) which means the rules don’t apply to the ruling class. Only the peasants.

Seriously, though, nice try with your agenda. *rolls eyes*
