The Lowbie Diaries Vol. 27: Illithiel
Welcome to a project, experiment, challenge or whatever you wanna call it. Normally experiencing the content with well-geared toons, I figured it would be quite interesting to approach the game from the perspective of a casual player. How does it feel starting from scratch and build up a character without the help of your mains? How long does it take until you are geared enough for the latest endgame content? Welcome to the Lowbie Diaries, it should be fun!
As said in my last diaries, my Wizzy is now mature and it makes limited sense to use him for such a project any longer. This means Illithiel is born, a free-2-play Cleric that I’m going to try to bring up without any real money injections. I chose a Cleric because I like the class and the demand will hopefully make things easier to get into groups. I’m aiming for a buff DC and hence chose Drow because of the fitting racial.
First we have to level her of course and I decided to exclusively use the leveling dungeons for that. It’s my approach of leveling alternative characters. Running two lower level dungeons fully rewards you with the daily ADs and you never run out of level-appropriate gear because of the Equipment Chests you get from the Seal vendor. It’s really the most convenient way to level to 60, but not the fastest one. If you want to focus more on leveling you can always do additional quests in the adventure areas, especially since completing those will reward minor gimmicks with the coming Sword Coast Adventures campaign of campaigns.
The ADs you get are really substantial on that level. I was able to buy Radiants for the offensive slots, Darks for the defensive ones, Azures for utility and Ancient Mulhorand gear (minus the Clock, it’s expensive…) really quick. Starting at level 20 you want to make sure to grab the daily dungeon key and at level 30 I’d go for the third bag and also start Tyranny of Dragons.
My grown up Wizard had to change guilds, because his current one dissolved over night. I guess that’s something you have to live with. The guild simply couldn’t acquire enough donators and the leader decided it makes no sense this way. Because the new guild is way more progressed I instantly started to farm Masterwork nodes for a decent AD net gain. Unsure whether I should start a Masterwork myself. Maybe for the sake of the project, but it’s a pain…
Meanwhile the double RP brought the first legendary to the toon. I had saved up enough RP to upgrade the weapon and it’s a nice accomplishment. I also maxed the Valindra Artifact, but haven’t upgraded it yet. I’m now saving for the next event and with Leadership rapidly approaching level 25, I might be even able to forge another legendary then.
With 3,000+ item level, the world of custom elite channels opens up for you. I’ve only joined one so far, but this is really where content completely gets trivialized and any challenge left becomes grind. I’m not going to complain though. If you manage to hit the threshold, everything becomes really easy.
