The Lowbie Diaries Vol. 41: Farming the River District

Lowbie Diaries BannerWelcome to a project, experiment, challenge or whatever you wanna call it. Normally experiencing the content with well-geared toons, I figured it would be quite interesting to approach the game from the perspective of a casual player. How does it feel starting from scratch and build up a character without the help of your mains? How long does it take until you are geared enough for the latest endgame content? Welcome to the Lowbie Diaries, it should be fun!

As said in Vol. 39 I’d like to talk a bit about farming the River District, which is currently the main task of my lowbie.

Weapon Choices

First of all let’s get into why I’m going for the Ascended Weapons. Characters currently have four weapon choices:

Depeding on your build either the Masterwork or the Module 10 set is clearly best-in-slot. One is super expensive though and the other one gated behind endgame content. Most casual characters that are starting fresh might find Storm Kings Thunder too challenging, or even don’t have the item level requirement for Svardborg. Even if the set requires substantial farming for keys in Sea of Moving Ice or a heavy investment in Legendary Dragon Keys. Overall both Relic and Stronghold Weapons are probably well out of reach for most lowbies.

Why Ascended Weapons?

The Chult variant isn’t, because they are super cheap on the Auction House. If you want to take the most convenient way, just buy them and live a happy life. The set however comes without a real set bonus, and that’s going to be an issue if you plan to take your character to greater heights eventually.

In come the Mod 11 options, which are endgame viable and relatively easy to farm in about 35 days. All you need to go for are Arcane Magical Writings and whatever bound second reagent is required for the weapon of your choice at a 3:1 rate per day. And even if you’re a lower item level, everything can be zerged. Just lfg for a major HE or SHE (Small Heroic Encounter) run and do them until you have three Writings. Then join a Kabal, Gyrion or Nostura demiplane or pug a Bronze Illusionist’s Gambit.

Heroic Encounter in the River District nearly do it all

Additionally five HEs complete the “Mercentile Missions” daily and most of the time even the “Secure the Area” task. The heroics nearly do it all! What can happen though is that you need to farm a few more Arcanic Focus or Abandoned Treasures for the restoration. Overall it’s reasonable effort per day for a reasonable amount of time. Please also note that you do not have to unlock any campaign tasks to get rewards in demiplanes. You are just unable to get own portal stones. So you can start the full farming process with day one in the campaign.

I hope this helps explaining why going for Ascended Weapons makes tons of sense for lowbies even if the Chult ones are much easier to get. With this strategy I’m now up to 15+ Petrified Dust and 45+ Arcane Magical Writings. Progress stalled a bit lately as I ran Chult on my mains, but that should change in the next weeks.

That’s it for today. See you next time!
