Neverwinter Makes MOP’s List of Healthiest MMOs of 2018

The fact that we’re getting closer to the end of 2018 means that in the coming weeks more and more sites will dish out plenty of toplists ranking and rating the MMOs on the market. As it turns out Massively Overpowered decided to start the party early with their “List of Healthiest MMOs of 2018“. And guess what, you favorite game came in at number six! Here’s what the editors over there had to say about our title:

[su_quote]It has not been a great year for Neverwinter, but it hasn’t been a bad year either. It’s just been a year. In many ways it feels like a year in which the game has managed to keep on keeping on, not making any community missteps big enough to merit incoherent screaming while not really expanding beyond its base or its usual pace of updates. Of course, sometimes that in and of itself is indicative of health, when you can just roll out a reasonable stream of content and avoid faltering in the process. It hasn’t been a good enough year for the game to bump it up at all, but it hasn’t fallen off the list. We’ll count that as “doing all right.”[/su_quote]

Those reviews from general MMO sites normally tend to be superficial. This one certainly is as well, but it’s still refreshingly accurate. Neverwinter continued it’s path slow and steady, and it was successful enough to constantly bring new players in and keep some of the veterans interested. That might sound underwhelming, but in a year that WildStar got shut down we might as well be a little more appreciative that we’re still around.

Neverwinter Didn’t Make a Major Splash

As MOP rightfully mentioned however, Neverwinter didn’t really make any major strides either. We believe the game is generally moving into the right direction, but first and foremost lacks resources to really expand. So 2018 also was another year in which Cryptic hasn’t been able to take the game to the “next level”, neither in terms of features or player base. We surely will talk about that a lot more in our own reviews, but for now we tend to agree with the “doing all right” label. Neverwinter by the way made various MOP toplists before, and we certainly hope this won’t be the last time.

Here are all titles on the list:

  1. WoW
  2. FF XVI
  3. ESO
  4. RuneScape
  5. BDO
  6. Neverwinter
  7. GW2
  8. Warframe
  9. EVE
  10. PoE

Neverwinter is like an older brother: constantly messing things up for you and pissing you off, but we can’t help loving it anyway. 🙂

    Congrats Cryptic… I guess…

I’d argue that the only reason it’s on the list at all is because it exists on all three platforms. Otherwise it probably wouldn’t break the top ten.

As much as I like the game, it’s also hard to see how it gets to the ‘next level’. For the years to come, I’d expect even more of the same. … Like what would they do to make any big changes? Make it 4k?

Neverwinter is what it is. … It’ll probably be around a few more years, but it’s an old engine with 15 mods of content piled on top.

BDO just got to Xbone as a beta. I’ve only played a little, but the visuals are fantastic.

Thats less a statement about NW and more a statement about the sad state of MMOs in general. Not a lot of work being put into them, and a decent amount of talk surrounding how ‘played out’ the genre is. I don’t subscribe to that theory myself about it being played out, rather I think thats the general disappointment about where we are talking.

We’re playing a game rehashed to f2p for 2013, that has largely been unchanged technology wise since then. Every time they give us a week of content for a month of time-gated play doled out ever 4 monthes or so. ..and this time they badly flopped trying to bring humor into the mix.

Does it deserve to be in the top MMOs? Probably yes. Is that something to brag about or take as a mark of success? Definitely no.

Oh, you mean “financially healthy”, or something? I was about to comment that I have seen a lot less Toxicity from the Nubs and Scrubs my new CW has PuGed with for Malabog’s Castle and Valindra’s Tower!

But these tables are meaningless unless they are separated by platform, and also if we have some idea of:

    a) how many other MMOs there actually are and

    b) the size of each player base.

I mean, number 10 on that list could have 17 players or something, for all we know.

But I am very pleased that the NW server isn’t going to be wiped and reformatted any time soon!

I was surprised about ESO, though.

    🙂
