PlayStation 4 Free Beholder Mount Pack Leaks Prematurely

Neverwinter Ravenloft was supposed to be the only big addition to the game yesterday, but because of a bug, players might have gotten a sneak peek to even more stuff! The Sony PlayStation store featured four brand-new packs yesterday, which have since been removed again. Two of them, the “Personal Beholder Mount” and the “Intern Promo Pack” are clearly linked to the “Day of the Dungeon Master” event. The other contain a new promo companion and a PAX title. All of them were free to claim, but didn’t actually grant any items.

What’s the Story Here?

Of course especially the Beholder Personal Tank raised some eyebrows. Its description pretty clearly states that it’s indeed the legendary version that has like a super tiny chance to drop from the “Day of the Dungeon Master” event. Are players really able to get that for free in the future, or only on the PS4? The official explanation is “bug” and that the packs were added for testing purposes only and appeared in the store unintentionally.

[su_quote cite=”nitocris83 (CM)”]Several free items were placed in the PlayStation Store earlier today unintentionally. These items were for internal use/testing purposes and not meant to be public facing. Claiming these items did not reward them to the player’s account. We are in the process of working with our partners to remove these items from the store. We apologize for any inconvenience.[/su_quote]

Part of Cryptic’s compensation of the mistake however did reveal that these packs are indeed real. Players that tried to claim the packs will find these available in the Rewards Claim Agent now (not the Beholder Mount though, sorry!).

[su_quote cite=”nitocris83 (CM)”]Players who attempted to claim the promotional items will find these available in the Rewards Claim Agent with the exception of the Beholder Mount. We feel this solution addresses the inconvenience of the situation but does not devalue the mount obtained by players through in-game participation.[/su_quote]

So the speculation can officially begin! It’s obvious that the original announcement was just damage control. The packs were not solely for testing purposes but meant to be put into the store at a later date. As mentioned some packs can probably be linked to events while the PAX West title will be handed out this weekend. We also believe they are indeed free because otherwise Cryptic probably wouldn’t have delivered them as compensation now.

What About the Beholder?

Which still leaves us with the Beholder Tank Mount mystery. Was this just testing? Were they checking on some new logic or system that unlocks items in the store? But then why not pick some placeholder item but the Beholder Tank Mount and give it a full description? So there’s a chance that the mount like the other packs leaked prematurely and will be available at some point. We highly doubt though that it will be for free. Even if Cryptic makes the pack available, handing out legendary mounts to everyone is probably too good to be true.

    “Damage Control”?

    You mean a deliberate lie?

Giving everyone a free legendary mount is really nuts. I hope this was just a mistake. It would change the mount economy substantially if such a cool mount was free. It would also create platform comparison issues that likely would not be healthy for the game.
