Soulmonger’s Lockbox RNG Test and Review

Another update means another lockbox, and in the case of “Lost City of Omu” it’s the Soulmonger’s Lockbox. After previewing it I’ve now performed my usual RNG test on the lockbox and have incorporated the results into our RNG toolbox (also available there is the current version of the Glorious Resurgence Lockbox). “RNG test” means we’ve opened a substantial amount of lockboxes on the preview server to get an idea about drop rates. The numbers in this article are based on tests from Youtuber Rainer and myself. I have performed similar tests for the Lockbox of the LostMerchant Prince LockboxLockbox of the Nine and the Many-Starred Lockbox. Just click through in case you’re interested.

As usual you’ll roughly have a 1% chance at one of the major prices, with the legendary one coming in at 0.19%. All drop rates largely match the ones of previous lockboxes, indicating that no major changes were made.

Blue drops

To be honest, the blue line of drops could be better. Let’s start with the positives though. The comeback of  Genie’s Gifts and a professions pack is very nice. Profession assets were steadily rising in price up to a point where it made no sense investing in them, especially given the current state of professions. The pack will now flood the market with fresh tools and craftsman again. I also personally like these Mount Packs. They usually hand out a wide range of Insignia Bonuses for reasonable prices, and the six included mounts in this lockbox are no different. Also, who doesn’t like more looks to choose from?

But then… jeez. The Lost Artifact Pack is already a little downer. I think it’s ok that the lockbox still offers a small chance at an Ultimate Enchanting Stone, but the Soul Sight Crystal was already not worth anything. Another package around the Enchanting Stones would clearly have been better. The Forgotten Enchantment Pack in the meantime features two of the worse Armor and Weapon Enchantments. So I fail to see why players would go for it. It’s obvious that the devs want to cycle through all the enchantments in these packs, but the wacky balancing comes back to bite them. There are just too few that actually matter. On the plus side: Can’t hurt to stash away a few while they’re cheap. Who knows what the next balancing pass will bring.

Oh and by the way. The Adventurer Pack is so bad that it’s going to get its own article. Stay tuned…

Epic and Legendary Drops

Since the blue drops are lacking a little bit, the best things to get are actually the rare rewards. The Triceratops adds to the fabulous line of Dinosaur Mounts in Chult, and the “War” variant is the first one to offer +16,000 HP as Equip Bonus. The Infant Gorilla as Augment Companion might not fit into the current meta, but it could become a very viable pet for budget builds and alts. With three ring slots it’s super easy to gear and should be quite cheap over the course of the module.

Outlook

The blue drops make this lockbox a hard one to open in my eyes. As much as I like the look of the Triceratops, you’ll get more bang for you buck opening other lockboxes. The epic version will be available in the Trade Bar Shop in the future and the legendary one included in the Glorious Resurgence Legendary Pack anyway. So there will be other ways of getting the mount without buying into a weak lockbox.

“This information is not supported by PWE and provides information that sheds a negative light on unpublished and unknown drop rates within the game.”

    ROFLMAO!

When I opened a bunch of boxes a while back, I got 4 Soul Sight Crystals – 1 Epic and 3 Green. They are still in the bank as they are dirt cheap on the AH.

How do you do these tests?

I didn’t open any lock boxes last 2x Enchants, so I should have 100 or more VIP keys by the next one. What do you think is the best box to open, seeing as I like to get Companions packs and they aren’t in this new one? I like to get decent Mount Insignia as well.

I am thinking either Glorious Resurgence, Merchant Prince or the Lost.

    Any tips?

Currently I’d settle for some of the older ones… Merchant Prince or even Firemane. You can’t do wrong with Glorious Resurgence either.

Glorious Resurgence would not be recommended as they wont have any companion packs, plus you will get the Adventurer Packs :(. I would use your Glorious Resurgence lockboxes now before the Soulmonger is released, and save them until after the rotation.

Another positive fact about the mount packs is that they drop the super overpriced dominance insignias 🙂

By the way – you only received 6 War Triceratops in 5k lockboxes? I received 23 in 10k… that difference is huge (0,23% vs 0,10% drop rate)…. When did you open yours? I opened mine the day after the lockbox came out…. I already thought the drop rates were a bit high and was thinking maybe the drop rates are higher the first (couple of) day(s)?

Seems like it’s just a classic case of RNG. The observed results are within a variance that you would expect.

Hmm not sure if I agree. We are talking about some serious sample sizes here. This should negate the impact of RNG variations by a significant amount (otherwise the conclusion is – 10k is not a sufficiently sized sample rate to give a conclusive indication of drop rates).

The fact that my drop rate was literally twice as high, for me, is very suspicious to say the least.

I am not surprised at that disparity. I know people who have never got a Legendary result, ever (EG, me) and I just opened 108 Lockboxes and got mostly garbage. I think the “best” was 2 Blood Rubies. But I got no Rank 9 enchants or runes, no Bondings and no Epic Mounts or Companions.

It would be interesting for someone to do a full-blown, post-doctoral level statistical analysis on such a large number of results and assess the “random” quality of their RNG seeds.

Neverwinter’s Pseudo-RNG is incredibly streaky. I often suspect they have a “Fuck You” sub-routine, depending on the character you use and general level of in-game wealth.

I also just opened 382 Coffers of Celestial Artifact Equipment, and was fairly pleased with 13 Coal Wards (3.4%).

But in the first 100 I got only 1 Coal, the next 100 dropped 5, the next 100 dropped 6 and the last 82 dropped 1.

    Box#
    006 Coal Ward

    110 Coal Ward
    114 Coal Ward
    149 Coal Ward
    150 Coal Ward
    175 Coal Ward

    251 Coal Ward
    252 Coal Ward
    257 Coal Ward
    269 Coal Ward
    296 Coal Ward
    297 Coal Ward

    377 Coal Ward

We can see the “Fuck You” subroutine in the first 100 boxes. In the 2nd 100 I got 2 in a row once, while in the 3rd 100 Coffers I got 2 in a row twice.

That is not a random distribution, although it is about 3.4% overall. I also got 12 Superior Enchanting Stones (3.14%).

No wonder people say you should save them up and need a few hundred to get decent results.

But as long as I get something at or just above the 3%, I can be content.

Unfortunately, as I opened the Coffers first, the “Fuck You” subroutine re-initialised for the Lockboxes!

    🙂
