The Official Subreddit Featured Some Good Old Drama a Couple Weeks Ago

Everybody loves some good drama, right? Well then you should have closely watched the official subreddit a couple weeks ago, because it was entertaining! It all started with a simple thread in which a user complained about lag. It’s not really unusual that players take their frustration to message platforms in case they believe the problem is not on their end. Lag however is a complicated issue to debug, and often guys blame Cryptic for something that the company has no control over. Simply because you have issues reaching the game servers doesn’t mean that the problem indeed are the game servers. A thread however that only asks whether anybody else is experiencing lag shouldn’t be an issue, right? Absolutely not, unless of course the mods decide to lock it because the poster didn’t want to agree that it’s not Cryptic’s fault.

[su_quote]Locked because OP rather not admit that it’s not on Cryptic’s end this time.[/su_quote]

Granted, you don’t want misinformation to spread, but with lag there’s no right or wrong, just subjective experience. If you personally have issues it doesn’t mean there’s a global one. But if there is no global issue it also doesn’t mean that individuals can’t experience lag. So shutting down threads because “lie” is dodgy in itself, but adding a snarky comment just downright uncalled-for. It just creates the impression that you’re not really interested in a discussion but want to facilitate certain opinions. The reaction of the community was predictably harsh. Several threads popped up bashing moderation and accused them of abuse of power. Some comments crossed lines, but it’s hard to deny that this was a self-inflicted wound.

The fight extended behind the scenes as apparently a person or group of users used throwaway accounts to mass report every comment or post that members of the moderation made, regardless of content. Additionally, although that’s not related to the drama, the subreddit recently even lost one body to handle the mess. Not long ago four moderators were listed on the sidebar, now it’s down to three (plus they’re currently recruiting). So yeah, there’s definitely stuff going on over there, and not in a good way.

It’s really a shame because moderating in such a manner is not what reddit should be all about. First and foremost the software is build to self-moderate using the up and downvotes. As such it should also allow players to freely discuss topics beyond the reach of Cryptic and PWE. That’s unfortunately not the case as the sub fully follows the official ToS and hence is jokingly referred to as “official” (although it’s not). That not only makes the platform redundant (and less valuable for the community), but Reddit acting as extension of studios is indeed something that should be called out. The MassivelyOP weekly pod recently touched on that while talking about an issue in Black Desert Online. We couldn’t agree more on what MOP’s Bree said:

[su_quote]I mean at the same time that’s kind of our job (reporting such issues). […] Some of the issues we get, you know, by the time we get to it all of the threads on Reddit have been wiped. It’s like… really? […] The Reddit mods are gonna help the studio bury a story? I feel that’s exactly when it’s our job to make sure that doesn’t happen. Especially if it’s legitimate.[/su_quote]

Because of that we currently advise against volunteering for a moderating job on Reddit. You will either not be acting in the community’s best interest or will eventually clash with the other members of the team over their agendas and extremist opinions.

Maniacgypsum really is a twat. It’s a shame there’s no Neverwinter Uncensored Reddit.

How a bunch of tossers can take over a user-created forum and impose corporate rules frm a company they don’t even work for is a mystery to me.

remember when we were getting all those DOS attacks, took a long time for cryptic to own up what was going on. Anyhow, as i told my guildies, there is always lag the first launch of a new mod. To many people downloading the massive patch at once and more server activity than usual as people run in to start campaigns, etc

There was also that time awhile back where cryptics ISP was fighting with other iSPs and was causing weird routing problems. At the time I lived in Mexico and cryptic told me I had to get my ISP to work with their ISP as it was out of their hands. Yeah that works, hi i’m putz, can you have your network engineers contact XYZ and work out a new routing table to improve this one game I play that no one else in this town does. I’d have to go back through my trouble tickets but I wasn’t the only one effected and many people in mexico and the US were routing through the EU proxy to bypass routing issues between north american traffic. That’s right, it was faster to route from north america through europe and back to north america than it was to communicate within our own continent.

I remember those DDOS attacks. It was a guy with a Twitter or Facebook account called God of Neverwinter, and he would announce it in advance and brag and gloat about it as it was ongoing. All he was really doing was screwing up other players, but his supporters would encourage and praise the idiot, as it if was PWE and Cryptic that would suffer.

Why that did not come under some sort of cyber crime is another mystery.

It is very true that there is often dreadful lag during a major new launch or a very large event. There also seems to be an influx of new players, too. Shame so many of them missed the Jubilee.

Oh, the recent lag, as usual, seems very intermittent as well. Sometime you cannot move or invoke for several minutes, and when you can move, you rubber band all over PE. Then it settles down. It’s affected me several times recently, despite the rest of the internet being virtually instantaneous.

Changing character and invoking can take up to as much as 2 minutes, which is ridiculous. Their ping tracer route thing always shows a massive lag at the Boston hub in the US.

Other times it has been as smooth as silk and as fast and responsive as it should be, while other people complain of lag. Changing character and invoking takes less than 10 seconds.

It feels like they have us on a rota to spread round the misery.

ManicGypsy is a fucking cuntwad and bans anyone that doesn’t toe the line praising neverwinter as the greatest game of all time 24/7/365

That’s not true–I praise Neverwinter as the greatest game of all time and I’m still on the verge of being banned because I said, “If you’re going to delete anything that mentions/links to Neverwinter Uncensored (regardless of if it’s a screenshot of a piece of gear), then maybe just put in the submission rules it’s not allowed.”

The cunt said, “We’re not going to advertise for them.”

      My junk account/auto-poster says otherwise…
